Escherichia coli and coliform bacteria are tested as "indicator organisms" in many microbiological analyses. While for example in food, beverage and surface water analysis E. coli shows as a markerorganism potential health threat, coliform bacteria are generally recognized as indicators of insufficient hygiene. Positive finding of these bacteria generally is a sign of fecal contamination and most likely other pathogenic bacteria might be present.
