Quality Control DNA Analysis in Aquaculture
Smart DNA analysis in a matter of minutes
The aquaculture industry relies strongly on knowing the ploidy of its produce to confidently to select which specimens are used for breeding. Selecting the correct specimens has direct influence on profitability, viability and sustainability of a business.
Most naturally occurring fish, crustaceans and oysters contain diploid genetic material, although spontaneous levels of polyploidy are also known to occur in nature. This is documented in species such as the Siberian sturgeon, which is tetraploid. In general, diploid and tetraploid organisms are fertile, while those with odd numbers (i.e. triploids, pentaploids, etc.) are sterile.
Flow cytometry offers a fast and easy way to perform ploidy analysis and identify triploidy in DNA samples.
By using fluorescent dyes that bind to DNA molecules, flow cytometry can evaluate a cell’s chromosome content by detecting the intensity of the fluorescence emitted by the dye-labelled nuclei.
Ploidy analysis with flow cytometry is accurate, fast, and cost-efficient
